Can Kenwood, Motorola and Icom radios work together?
Different radio brands can share some networks. Compare exact frequencies, analogue or digital modes, programming and required features before buying.
Compare the channel, then the brand
Radios from different brands can communicate when their hardware and programmed channel settings support the same operation. A shared VHF or UHF badge alone does not establish compatibility: both radios must cover the actual transmit and receive frequencies.
On a conventional analogue FM network, check channel width, CTCSS/DCS tones, selective calling and any repeater access settings. Channel numbers on the radios are labels; “channel 1” can contain different frequencies on different radios.
Digital modes must match
DMR, NXDN, dPMR and P25 are different digital systems. Two radios described as digital do not necessarily share a usable digital mode. Some models support more than one system, depending on their exact version and enabled options.
For example, Kenwood identifies the NX-1200DE3 as DMR and analogue FM. Icom documents separate NXDN and dPMR versions within its IC-F3400D family. Check the full model suffix and enabled features rather than assuming a whole brand uses one digital standard.
Conventional DMR also needs matching colour code, time slot, talkgroup and call settings. Trunking, managed networks, encryption and proprietary features require a separate expert check; a shared digital standard does not guarantee those features will work across brands.
Check accessories and hazardous-area requirements
Network compatibility does not make batteries, chargers or headsets interchangeable. ATEX suitability is another separate check: the radio, battery and accessories supplied must meet the site requirement as an approved combination.
